SDG&E’s Multifamily Energy Efficient Community Project Ribbon Cutting

Grand Villa Apartments in Escondido.

After conducting an extensive search in collaboration with the San Diego County Apartment Association, SDG&E has selected Grand Villa Apartments in Escondido to become its Multifamily Energy Efficient Community Project. “Our goal is to raise awareness about SDG&E’s multifamily retrofit offerings—the Multifamily Energy Efficiency Rebate program and Energy Upgrade California Multifamily program,” explained DeDe Henry, SDG&E Program Manager. “We want to give multifamily property owners and stakeholders a tangible example of how they can use these programs to further improve tenant comfort, decrease energy expenses, and reduce costly turnovers and vacancies at their properties.”

Grand Villa Apartments is located in Escondido, where high temperatures are common in the summer months. SDG&E plans to invest up to $70,000 into the 41-unit community to assess, model, and install upgrade measures designed to reduce energy usage by at least 10 percent. “We are so excited to be selected for this project,” says Debbie Splinter, regional manager for R.A. Snyder Properties. “This will really make a positive impact on the comfort of our residents, especially on extremely hot days.”

Benningfield Group conducted a full energy assessment and energy modeling over the summer. The recommended scope of work includes replacing outdoor lighting with high efficacy pin-based fixtures, upgrading the existing pool pump with a variable speed pump, installing demand controls on the domestic hot water system, installing new vinyl low-e windows, and replacing AC units. In addition, units will receive upgraded energy efficient dishwashers and refrigerators, along with new electric resistance heaters. Grand Villa Apartments’ property management team is incorporating these energy upgrades into a larger overall renovation plan currently underway.

SDG&E will host a ribbon cutting event at Grand Villa Apartments on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 from 10:30 to 11:30 am, to give multifamily professionals, local businesses, and neighborhood residents a first-hand look at the benefits of energy efficiency.
